Reiki FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions:

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a gentle and safe form of energy healing that is geared towards removing energy blocks in our system caused by emotional, mental or physical stress and pain. Reiki can help alleviate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual stress. It is a way to ‘tune-up’ your energy to it’s healthiest state allowing for healing to take place. Reiki is comprised of two Japanese words: "Rei" meaning universal and "Ki" meaning life force energy. Reiki is the "life force energy" that flows through and around us, this energy is what allows us to be physically alive.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki goes to where it is needed the most; the practitioner is just the conduit. The energy works its way through the body’s meridians (energy channels) affecting both the organs and chakras (spiritual energy centers), so if you have an injury or a stomach ache, for example it will flow particularly to this area. The energy also cleanses and detoxifies the body eliminating unwanted toxins.

What can I expect during a session?

Reiki is an individualized experience and every session is unique. Some report feeling warmth, coolness or light vibrations but feelings of deep relaxation are generally felt by all. In addition, many feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. As the Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings, a state of peace and well-being is experienced, so whatever one's personal experience is, it will be positive. At the end of the session, one feels refreshed, with a more positive, balanced outlook and re-newed energy.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki will help restore the balance in the body and can relieve, reduce or even sometimes remove symptoms. Reiki has been successfully used on conditions such as stress (stress-related illness responds well to Reiki), pain, headaches, stomach upsets, back problems, asthma, respiratory problems, menstrual problems, sinus, anxiety and many, many more. Remember, that as an individual, you must have firm intentions of getting well, before any real healing can take place.

Can I have a Reiki treatment if I’m on medication?

Reiki is a complementary therapy that can help healing processes and in many cases improve both physical and mental health.

Is it safe to have a treatment if I’m pregnant?

Yes, Reiki is a gentle form of healing, since a practitioner does not manipulate, diagnose nor prescribe medication. The energy that flows from a Reiki practitioner's hands always works towards the highest good of both the recipient and the practitioner, it is therefore completely safe and can be used to enhance any other medical or alternative therapy.

What should I wear to the session? Should I eat before my session?

It is suggested you wear loose, comfortable clothing. If you eat before a session it is recommended it be a light meal or snack. If you eat a large meal before the session a lot of your body's energy will be focused on digesting your food instead of healing your body! Equally, a meal directly after a session is not recommended for the same reason.

Will I feel better right away?

The response to a session is unique to each individual. Although the practitioner can usually provide some relief after one session, the client usually feels optimum results after several successive treatments. Conditions of muscular tension are generally the quickest to resolve. The more chronic a condition the longer it will take to get better, though improvement in symptoms may be almost immediate.

Is there any point in having therapy if I feel well?

Definitely! Just as you would schedule a massage for relaxation and pampering in times of health, Reiki is an excellent tool to keep you in peak condition and prevent the onset of disease. Reiki supports you in finding and maintaining balance. Prevention is better than cure.
