Principles to Live By: Finding Your Perfect Rhythm

Many years ago, when I began studying the Japanese art of Jin Shin Jyutsu, I was introduced to a powerful idea: a Universal Energy animates everything. Around that time, a quote by George Leonard became an instant favorite of mine:
"At the heart of each of us, whatever the imperfections, exists a silent pulse of perfect rhythm which connects us to the universe."
I just love that. It perfectly captures the essence of this work.
Over the years, my curiosity led me beyond Jin Shin Jyutsu to other forms of energy healing, (Cranio-Sacral therapy, Chakra Balancing, Soul-Focused/Esoteric Healing, Reiki, Kaiut Yoga, and ancestral clearing). With each modality I explore, my understanding deepens regarding how the complex layers of our BE-ing interact with each other and the greater universe.
Introducing the Reiki Precepts
In the practice of Reiki, we are given five foundational Precepts. I like to think of them as an expanded, deeply mindful version of the traditional "Golden Rule." They are incredibly applicable to daily life, whether you practice energy work or not:
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will be grateful.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will be kind to every living being.
These precepts invite us to let go of heavy emotional burdens, honor our daily efforts, and appreciate the wonder of our lives.
The Power of "Just for Today"
My absolute favorite part of these principles is the anchor: "Just for today."
Focusing on a single 24-hour block makes it much easier to dwell in the present moment. It stops us from obsessing over the past or projecting fear into the future. The precepts remind us to honor the NOW, allowing us to take small, manageable bites of life instead of looking too far ahead and becoming overwhelmed.
How to Integrate the Precepts Into Your Routine
I invite you to spend a little time with these precepts each day. A wonderful routine is to connect with them right after waking up in the morning, and just before closing your eyes at night.
If looking at all five feels daunting, start with just one and gradually layer in the others. You can repeat your chosen precept silently or out loud, allowing its specific vibration to settle into your BE-ing. They also make wonderful anchors for a dedicated meditation practice.
A Powerful Cross-Modality Practice
To deepen this experience, you can combine the Reiki Precepts by holding your fingers as we are taught in Jin Shin Jyutsu. This physically helps clear the limiting attitudes that disharmonize our bodies, paving the way for balance and transformation.
Match the precepts to your fingers:
To let go of WORRY:Â Hold your Thumb.
To let go of ANGER:Â Hold your Middle Finger.
To do your work honestly:Â Hold your Little Finger.
To give thanks for your blessings:Â Hold your Ring Finger.
To be kind to every living thing:Â Hold your Index Finger.
Returning to Balance
By bringing these simple intentions into your hands and your heart, you will likely notice a profound shift in your ability to center yourself when life gets chaotic.
I leave you with a final thought from Albert Einstein, which perfectly mirrors the power of living intentionally:
"The most important human endeavor is the striving for morality in our actions. Our inner balance and even our very existence depend on it. Only morality in our actions can give beauty and dignity to life."
